The schools wildlife crime project 2007/8 is currently underway. 58 classes with approximately 1500 pupils are participating. To prepare
the pupils for the projects, each class has been provided with an hour-long DVD made by Tayside Police and featuring different aspects
of wildlife crime.
We are again grateful to Scottish Natural Heritage for offering to providing the venue and buffet for the eventual winners and their parents at the prizegiving on 7 May 2008. We are also grateful to Dobbies Garden World at Perth and Monifieth for again donating £1500-worth of shopping vouchers as prizes. The projects this year are 1. Nature Diary utilising observation/drawing/presentation skills Keep an Autumn nature diary over a period of 5 days, with notes and drawings of observations, or by sticking small items such as leaves, nuts, berries, birds' feathers or cones eaten by squirrels into the diary. Relevant news or magazine cuttings can also be used to advantage. Note: Most items of interest for the nature diary can be found in late September or October with the changing of the seasons 2. Coloured Drawing utilising drawing/design skills Draw in colour on A4 paper an animal, bird, fish, plant or insect that can be found in the wild in Scotland. 3. Short Story utilizing writing/observation/communication skills Write a short story entitled A Day in the Life of a Police Wildlife Crime Officer, with the writer imagining that he or she is in that job for the day, and making use of the information available on the DVD to decide on a case or cases to 'investigate'. 4. Wildlife Law Quiz utilizing social/communication/interpretation skills Complete a wildlife law quiz. This will be based mainly on what has been taught through the DVD. It should be completed at home with the help of parents, relatives, friends etc. Fun Quiz (optional) Complete a short quiz set by Dobbies Gardenworld based primarily on wildlife-friendly gardening. There is a prize for the best quiz in each of the areas (Angus, Dundee and Perth & Kinross) which will be presented to the winners at Dobbies Gardenworld, Perth or Carnoustie. This quiz will be circulated later in the year. Details and winners of each part of the project will be posted on this site.
