This is a mainly rural area which includes the communities of Blairgowrie, Coupar Angus, Meigle, Alyth, Strathardle and Glenshee. The section covers an area of approximately 440 square miles and has a total population of almost 21,000.
Blairgowrie Police Station, Ericht Lane (Click for map) Community liaison officers are responsible for fostering close links with the smaller and remote village communities. Blairgowrie is probably best known as being one of the finest areas in the country for producing soft fruit such as strawberries and raspberries. Casual workers from abroad flock to the area during the summer months to pick the fruit. Summer visitors enjoy various tourist attractions and the numerous golf courses which are located throughout the area are always popular. The winter months provide a different challenge to the officers policing the Section in that they are responsible for patrolling the north Perthshire sector of the A93 Perth/Braemar road which carries the majority of skiers to the slopes at Glenshee. This particular road is very exposed and is often badly affected by drifting snow. Personnel working in Blairgowrie are acutely aware of the dangers of severe weather and they regularly review contingency plans which may have to be implemented should skiers have to be evacuated from the slopes. |
