Tayside Police Special Branch Community Contact Unit (SBCCU) has been in operation since August 2005. It is staffed by 2 officers, Detective Constables Brian Young and Ryan MacDonald.

These officers carry out their duties openly but in plain clothes. The unit compliments the work of officers currently engaged in community liaison work throughout Tayside.

Why was the unit formed?

The unit was formed in the wake of the terrorist bombings in London in July 2005 where 52 people died and many others were injured.

The SBCCU was established in order to create channels of communication with our minority communities and to improve the flow of community intelligence between the police and communities in an effort to prevent a repeat of these atrocities.

Aims and Objectives of SBCCU

The strategic aim of the unit is to "provide reassurance through community contact and to improve intelligence gathering opportunities".

The objectives of the SBCCU are to
  • improve communication and links with all faiths and cultures through increased community contact at all levels, from places of worship to shopkeepers
  • establish and improve links with young people within our minority ethnic communities by visiting schools, colleges, universities and youth groups
  • establish and improve the current internal communication links between community liaison officers, local beat officers, intelligence officers and the SBCCU

What the SBCCU doesn't do

Tayside Police and the SBCCU do not seek to influence in any way the religious beliefs of individuals or the communities that we serve.

Tayside Police and the SBCCU do not monitor lawful politically active individuals nor lawful political or single issue groups.
