Special Branch plays a key role in protecting the public and maintaining order and carry out their work in accordance with the Home Office Guidelines on Special Branch work in the UK.

They acquire and develop intelligence to protect the public from national security threats, including terrorism and other extremist activity, and through this they play a valuable role in promoting public safety and cohesion.

The reality of a terrorist attack became starkly evident in July 2005 when a number of bombs exploded in London.
