The Accelerated Careers Development Programme (ACDP) aims to attract, identify, and develop a talent pool of officers to meet policing leadership challenges, set the future direction of the service, optimise resources and serve the public in a complex, highly accountable world.

The objectives of the Programme are to:
  • attract, identify and develop a talent pool of officers capable of managing future policing leadership challenges;
  • offer a phased developmental programme aimed at preparing and equipping ACDP Officers for senior posts within the Police Service; and
  • present accelerated career challenges and broad growth opportunities to optimise leadership and management potential.
The Programme is accessible to:
1. External graduates (or undergraduates in the final year of a degree course). Professional equivalent qualifications are also acceptable;
2. Graduate probationary officers (or undergraduate probationary officers in the final year of a degree course); and
3. Constables or Sergeants eligible for promotion beyond Inspector rank.
The selection process consists of initial application and aptitude tests, Force Selection Board and a National Assessment Centre.

The Programme comprises the following 5 phases:
  • Phase 1: (12 months) Temporary Sergeant on operational deployment.
  • Phase 2: (18 to 30 months) Sergeant undertaking developmental placements aimed at acquisition of effective leadership skills.
  • Phase 3: (12 months) Inspector on operational deployment.
  • Phase 4: (18-30 months) Inspector undertaking developmental placements aimed at acquisition of broader skills.
  • Phase 5: (no recommended time limit) Chief Inspector undertaking a range of further professional development.
A support structure involving networking, professional development events, coaching, mentoring, case conferences, personal development plans and links to services provided by the Senior Careers Development Service is offered to those on the Programme.

Any applicant applying to the programme who is not a police officer must also successfully complete the recruitment process for the Force of their choice. Details of the Force recruitment process will be found on their website.

The ACDP is strategically managed by the Police Officer Development Co-ordinator, based at the Scottish Police College.
