Tayside Police is looking for applications from people who have the skills and abilities necessary to undertake the important role of police officer.

If you are a person with strong communication skills, a commitment to providing a first class service to the community you serve, and a willingness to commit yourself wholeheartedly to the task you are given, then you could be the type of person we are looking for.

However, becoming a police officer is not something you should do on the spur of the moment.

Tayside Police Recruitment - Photo of police officers You must have a clear understanding of what you may be faced with, both in terms of the tasks you will have to undertake, and the fact that the organisation must provide a service 24/7. So if you are thinking about it, make sure you have done your research.
  • Would you be willing to give up most of your weekends?
  • How would you deal with working shifts?
  • Could you cope with dealing with sudden deaths, or informing a parent that their child has died?
  • Can you cope with aggressive behaviour?
  • Could you assert yourself effectively ensuring that you take control of a situation?
  • Could you deal with everyone in a professional manner, irrespective of factors such as their gender, race, nationality, age, sexual orientation, religion, domestic circumstances or whether or not they had a disability?
These are just some of the questions you should be asking yourself. Yes, you will get comprehensive training and you will get the support of the organisation, however it is not everyone that is suited to this environment.

On the plus side however, the job itself is very rewarding and few police officers will ever consider leaving to pursue another career. Being a police officer is something you can be proud of. It is a career with many opportunities, yet it is also one where many officers choose to remain a beat constable throughout their career because there is always variety and the beat constable is the backbone of the force.
