The Dundee City Police pipe band was inaugurated in 1905 when a small group of piping devotees in the force received permission from the Chief Constable to form a band.

There were only two other police pipe bands in Scotland at the time, one in Govan and one in Edinburgh.

Initially, band members had no uniforms, funds or equipment other than the bagpipes owned by individual members of the force. There was however no lack of enthusiasm, and through fundraising concerts and donations, uniforms were soon purchased.
