As part of the force's ongoing e-policing initiative, Tayside Police is running a three year trial which will see BT web kiosk terminals installed at strategic locations throughout the force area.

Presently there are units installed in hospital waiting areas at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Perth Royal Infirmary and Stracathro Hospital, near Brechin; Dundee University Students Union; and Arbroath Leisure Centre.

Launch of the Information Points by Tayside Chief Constable John Vine The kiosks provide access to the Tayside Police website and the websites of participating partner agencies including Angus Council, Dundee City Council, Perth & Kinross Council, NHS Tayside and Dundee University. They are designed to give members of the public in both rural and urban areas an additional means of accessing the force's growing range of online services.

The force website, which is accessed through the kiosk, has been upgraded to include much more information about the force, current job vacancies, latest news & appeals and roads & traffic information. If members of the public use the kiosks and website to access routing policing information it is hoped this will help to reduce demands on public enquiry staff, thus freeing up resources. The kiosks also feature a built-in keyboard that allows users to email questions or information directly to us.

However, the force regards these terminals as an additional means of communicating with the public rather than a means of replacing existing forms of contact the public might have with the police.

The kiosks feature
  • Intuitive touch screen user interface - simply touch the link to the information required
  • Keyboard and trackball - click on links and fill in online forms as you would on a home computer
  • Broadband connection - fast access to information
  • Built-in telephone handset - with one click users can contact the police control room, council helplines or the anonymous Crimestoppers line. The handset can also be used to make 999 calls in an emergency
As the pilot project progresses we will monitor the use of each kiosk to see if there are any differences in the pattern of use depending on location. We will also monitor the type of information kiosks users most frequently access and will thus be able to tailor the content accordingly.
